Many wing foiling schools<\/strong> offer the possibility to take either wing surfing lessons<\/strong> or wing foiling lessons<\/strong>. Why do these two possibilities exist and which one should you choose<\/strong> ? The confusion comes from the fact that wing surfing designates the sport as a whole<\/strong> but also a specific aspect of it<\/strong>. It all depends on how technical you want to get.<\/p>\n

THE ORIGIN OF ALL CONFUSION<\/h3>\n

When it comes to individual board sports happening in the water<\/strong>, surfing is the starting point of everything<\/strong>. For a long time, it wasn\u2019t conceivable to use a sail without a hull. Wind-powered activities were boat sailing activities<\/strong>. However, the power of waves has been used for centuries to propel wooden crafts. Surfing is the oldest water-based board-sport<\/strong> recorded in history.<\/p>\n

As all surfers know<\/strong>: windy days aren\u2019t usually good for riding<\/strong>. Waves become bumpy, they don\u2019t break properly, and aren\u2019t very enjoyable to surf<\/strong> anymore. That is until someone had the idea to attach a sail to a surfboard<\/strong>. The riders could now use the dreaded wind to propel their board, maneuver more easily and catch waves without having to even paddle. Windsurfing was born<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Other water-based board-sport ensued<\/strong>, the most popular being kite surfing<\/strong> followed today by wing surfing<\/strong>. Through their names, they all pay homage to<\/strong> the original water-based board sport: surfing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

WHY DID IT GET MORE COMPLICATED ?<\/h3>\n

With time, all these water-sports evolved and diversified<\/strong>. Each sport gave birth to several related activities<\/strong> that use the same sail as their model but combine it with different types of boards<\/strong> and conditions<\/strong>. Most practitioners usually focus on their favorite one and can take about it for hours. A time came when names had to be invented<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s focus on kite surfing<\/strong> to explain the situation. As for today, the word kite surfing can include<\/strong> all the following related activities: kite surfing<\/strong>, kite boarding<\/strong>, kite foiling<\/strong>, sup kiting<\/strong>, snow kiting<\/strong>, buggy kiting<\/strong>, or sand kiting<\/strong>. Kite surfing is a generic mainstream name that includes all of the upper listed variations.<\/p>\n

The same thing goes for wing surfing<\/strong>. At its roots, the word refers to any wind-powered activity using a wing for propulsion. If you want to be more specific, the board has to be somewhat similar to a surfboard<\/strong>. Add a hydrofoil<\/strong> to it and it becomes wingfoiling<\/strong>. Practice it on snow<\/strong> and you might call it snow winging<\/strong> or wing snowboarding.<\/p>\n

THE RISE OF WINGFOILING<\/h3>\n

Wing surfing is older<\/strong> than most people know. The first known prototype<\/strong> appeared in the early \u201980s<\/strong> as an alternative to windsurfing<\/strong>. However, the gear was<\/strong> heavy<\/strong>, bulky<\/strong> to handle, and needed a lot of wind<\/strong> to become enjoyable. It\u2019s only recently, due to the technological innovations of kite surfing<\/strong> and the democratization of hydrofoils<\/strong> that it really started appealing to people.<\/p>\n

Inflatable technology<\/strong> made sails more compact<\/strong>, more lightweight<\/strong>, and easier to store<\/strong>. Hydrofoils<\/strong>, allowed riders to have fun in much lighter winds<\/strong> than before. Everything finally came together to make wing surfing<\/strong> the next big thing in water sports<\/strong>. But if wing foiling<\/strong> is the most popular version of wing surfing<\/strong>, why do schools still offer wing surfing lessons<\/strong> ?<\/p>\n
